Rapid-fire tips:

  • Travel lightly
    • Yes, you can ship luggage to the next place very easily
    • Outside tokyo things are far less accessible for people rolling around 50-80 lbs of stuff. Lots of stairs and escalators going in the opposite direction to you.
  • Trains are your friend
    • but flights are extremely cheap
  • cash is still king.
    • Yes, CCs and touch/apple payments are widespread, but you WILL run into places where it matters.
    • you NEED a coin purse as equiv $1-$10 purchases (70% of all) are all denominated in coins or you get coins back
      • standard wallet is not enough
  • ATMs are at convenience shops. you don’t need too much cash before going. max like 50,000¥. more like 10,000¥.
  • unless price is very good like 0.5-0.6 yen to 1 dollar
